Chicago, Illinois – Chicago’s brief stretch of mild August weather will give way to steamy, storm-prone conditions this weekend, with heat index values approaching 100° by Saturday afternoon.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago, high temperatures will climb from the low 80s today and Thursday into the mid-90s by Saturday. Humidity will surge late Friday, creating sticky conditions and increasing the risk of scattered thunderstorms, especially near the Wisconsin state line Saturday evening.

The greatest heat and humidity will hit Saturday, when air temperatures could top 94° in the city and even higher inland. The combination of heat and moisture could be dangerous for those outdoors, with the National Weather Service urging residents to stay hydrated, limit strenuous activities, and take frequent breaks in air conditioning.

Sunday will stay humid, with highs in the upper 80s to low 90s and a 20–30% chance of showers or storms through the afternoon and evening.

Conditions are expected to moderate early next week, but more storms may develop depending on shifting weather patterns.
