Chicago, IL – The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Freeze Warning for much of northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, effective 1 a.m. to 8 a.m. Friday, as clear skies and light winds allow temperatures to plummet into the upper 20s and low 30s overnight.
The warning includes Cook, Lake, DuPage, Kane, DeKalb, LaSalle, Will, Kankakee, and Grundy counties in Illinois, and Lake, Porter, Newton, Jasper, and Benton counties in Indiana, covering major metro areas such as Chicago, Rockford, Joliet, Aurora, and Gary.
According to the National Weather Service, sub-freezing temperatures could kill outdoor plants and damage unprotected plumbing. Residents are advised to bring in potted plants, cover garden vegetation, and wrap or drain outdoor water lines.
The coldest readings are expected in inland suburbs and rural areas, with slightly milder temperatures closer to Lake Michigan. The freeze is expected to mark the end of the growing season for many locations in northern Illinois and northwest Indiana.
