Chicago, IL – Streets and underpasses across the Chicago metro could flood quickly this afternoon as heavy thunderstorms sweep through the region. A Flood Watch remains in effect through tonight for much of northeast Illinois, including Cook, DuPage, and Will counties, as well as Lake County in northwest Indiana.

According to the National Weather Service, rainfall rates could reach 1 to 2 inches per hour, especially in slow-moving or repeated storms. The combination of saturated soil from recent rain and the city’s dense pavement increases the risk of rapid water buildup in poor-drainage and low-lying areas.

Officials warn that creeks and streams could rise out of their banks, and some roads may become impassable. Drivers are urged to avoid flooded streets, where just a few inches of moving water can stall or sweep away vehicles. Residents should also secure outdoor belongings and be prepared to move to higher ground if water rises quickly.

The flood watch is expected to expire later tonight, but more showers may return midweek.
