CHICAGO, Ill. – Streets across the Chicago metro could see ponding and rising creeks before sunrise Sunday as heavy thunderstorms move through northern Illinois, triggering a Flood Advisory until 6:15 a.m.

According to the National Weather Service, between 1 and 3 inches of rain are expected to fall within just a few hours, impacting Cook, DuPage, Kane, Will, Kendall, Kankakee, Boone and DeKalb counties. The sudden downpours may push creeks and streams out of their banks and leave low-lying roads covered in water.

Cities under the advisory include Aurora, Joliet, Naperville, Elgin, Orland Park, Wheaton, and DeKalb. Drivers traveling on Interstates 55, 88, and 90 should prepare for sudden slowdowns where water collects, especially in underpasses and near construction zones. Local officials urge residents to avoid walking or driving through flooded roadways, as even shallow water can stall vehicles or sweep people off their feet.

The advisory is set to expire by early morning, but more rainfall is possible as storms move east. Additional warnings may be issued if flooding worsens.
