Chicago, Illinois – Heavy rain and strong thunderstorms are pounding the Chicago metro area this weekend, triggering multiple flood advisories and a flash flood warning that remain in effect into Sunday morning. Streets, viaducts, and low-lying areas are already seeing standing water, creating hazardous travel conditions across Cook County and surrounding suburbs.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, thunderstorms producing two to three inches of rainfall have already moved through the city, with additional rounds expected through Sunday morning. A flash flood warning is in effect for portions of northeastern Illinois, including DuPage, Lake, Will, and Cook counties, as well as northwest Indiana. Officials warn that creeks and rivers could rise quickly, while poor drainage areas are especially vulnerable to flooding.

Travel impacts are mounting across the region, with water reported on sections of Lake Shore Drive, I-90 near O’Hare, and low-lying neighborhood streets from Cicero to Harvey. Authorities are urging drivers to avoid flooded roads and reminding residents to “turn around, don’t drown.”

Storms are expected to ease Sunday afternoon, but additional showers and thunderstorms remain possible Monday and Tuesday before drier weather returns midweek. The National Weather Service advises residents to monitor updates, as further advisories could be issued if rainfall persists.
