Chicago, IL – Relentless heat is set to grip Chicago and much of northern Illinois through Thursday night, pushing heat index values above 100°F by day and keeping overnight lows near 80°F in urban areas.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the most dangerous stretch of this heat wave will be Wednesday afternoon through Thursday night. Heat indices in the city are forecast to reach 105°F or higher, while stifling humidity will keep conditions oppressive even after sunset. The city of Chicago will only see heat index values drop below 90°F for a few brief hours late Wednesday night.

Thunderstorm chances will increase late Thursday, especially closer to the Wisconsin state line. Widespread storms are likely Thursday night into Friday, offering much-needed relief and ending the intense heat. Some storms may be severe and could bring torrential rain or localized flooding, especially in low-lying areas and near major roadways such as I-90, I-55, and I-94.

Residents should limit outdoor activities, stay hydrated, check on vulnerable neighbors, and use air conditioning if possible. Keep phones charged in case of power outages during storms. This heat event rivals the worst seen in recent summers.

Heat warnings remain in effect through Thursday night, with further updates expected as storms develop and move across the region.
