Chicago, IL – Residents across Chicago and northern Illinois should prepare for scattered thunderstorms continuing into the evening hours Sunday. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago issued an update at 3:03 p.m. warning of the potential for lightning, heavy downpours, and gusty winds.
According to the NWS, storms are expected to remain isolated to widely scattered but could cause travel disruptions through at least 9 p.m. CDT. Forecasters said the strongest storms may produce wind gusts strong enough to down small tree branches and pose hazards for drivers, particularly on highways and open roadways.
The main concern remains cloud-to-ground lightning, which the weather service urges residents to take seriously. “Head indoors if a storm is headed your way,” officials cautioned in Sunday’s briefing.
Storms are moving toward the northeast at 15 to 20 miles per hour, meaning multiple counties in northern Illinois, including Cook, Lake, and DuPage, could experience quick bursts of heavy rain during evening commutes.
Drivers are advised to use caution in wet conditions and avoid driving through standing water. Those outdoors should seek shelter immediately if thunder is heard nearby.
The National Weather Service continues to monitor radar and will issue further updates if storm intensity increases.
