Chicago, IL – A hot and dry weekend is setting up across northern Illinois, with the National Weather Service warning of elevated fire danger on Sunday due to breezy conditions and unseasonably warm temperatures.

According to the US National Weather Service Chicago, high temperatures will reach the upper 80s to near 90 degrees Saturday before slightly cooler but still warm conditions continue Sunday, with highs between 82 and 87 degrees. Low humidity and gusty winds are expected to create an increased risk for brush and field fires Sunday afternoon.

A slow-moving cold front is forecast to arrive late Monday, bringing the chance of scattered showers north of Interstate 88. More widespread rainfall and significantly cooler conditions are expected Tuesday, with highs only in the mid-60s to low 70s and morning rain likely. Overnight lows by Tuesday night may dip into the 40s.

The weather service advises residents to use caution with outdoor burning, equipment use, and anything that could spark a fire this weekend. Cooler, wetter conditions are expected to reduce fire danger by early next week.
