Chicago, Illinois – Strong wind gusts up to 45 mph could impact travel across northern Illinois within hours Sunday, with storms increasing later in the day and continuing into the evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, southwest winds will strengthen late morning through early evening, creating hazardous conditions on east-west roadways including Interstate 88, Interstate 80, and along the I-290 corridor. Loose outdoor items may be blown around, and high-profile vehicles could experience difficult driving conditions.

Scattered showers and a few thunderstorms are expected to develop late this afternoon and evening, though widespread severe weather is not expected Sunday. High temperatures will climb into the mid to upper 70s, marking the start of a warmer, more humid pattern across the region.

The more significant concern arrives Tuesday into Wednesday, when a Level 2 out of 5 severe weather risk could bring damaging winds, large hail, and additional rounds of heavy rain across the Chicago metro and surrounding counties.

Residents should secure outdoor objects today and remain alert for changing conditions into midweek as multiple storm systems move through the region.
