Chicago, IL – A significant winter storm is moving across northern Illinois today, bringing heavy snow, hazardous travel, and rapidly changing road conditions across the Chicago metro area, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago. Forecasters expect the most intense snowfall rates of around 1 inch per hour to hit between 12 p.m. and 8 p.m. as the storm’s core moves through.

NWS graphics released early Saturday show widespread totals ranging from 7–11 inches across areas from Rockford to DeKalb and into the northwest Chicago suburbs. Farther south—including Joliet, Kankakee, and Rensselaer—amounts are expected to reach 5–9 inches. The agency emphasized that visibility will drop quickly during periods of highest snowfall, creating dangerous travel conditions through the evening.

According to NWS, temperatures will hover in the upper 20s to lower 30s, allowing snow to accumulate efficiently on untreated roads. Wind gusts may reach up to 30 mph, adding to blowing snow concerns. Some areas south of I-80 could see a brief mix of rain, drizzle, or snow early, but all precipitation is expected to transition back to accumulating snow throughout the day.

Forecasters also note the potential for lingering lake-effect snow into early Sunday morning, though the main impact window remains firmly centered on today.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and avoid unnecessary travel during peak snowfall. NWS advises residents to consider delaying trips, as very low visibility and snow-covered roads are likely through tonight.
