Chicago, IL – Winter weather is making for dangerous driving conditions across northern Illinois this morning as snow continues to fall, coating roadways and reducing visibility across much of the region. The National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago warns that roads are snow-covered and slick, especially near and north of Interstate 80.
Webcam footage shared by the NWS shows snow-packed conditions on I-39 near Mendota, along Kirk Road in Kane County, and on I-94 near the Lake and Porter County border. Forecasters say snowfall will continue through the morning before tapering off from west to east by late morning.
“The main message: roads are snow-covered in most areas near and north of I-80, and travel conditions are hazardous as a result,” the NWS said. “Consider delaying any travel until after the snow ends later this morning.”
Hazardous travel is expected to persist through mid-morning as untreated surfaces remain icy and slick. If travel is unavoidable, drivers should reduce speeds, increase following distance, and use extreme caution.
Conditions are expected to improve gradually by late morning as snow diminishes and road crews continue treatment operations.
