Chicago, IL – A Gale Warning remains in effect for Lake Michigan’s Illinois and Indiana shoreline as powerful west winds and large waves continue to impact the region through 9 a.m. CDT Wednesday, October 22.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, west winds are reaching up to 40 knots, creating waves up to 10 feet, occasionally peaking near 13 feet. The warning area extends from Winthrop Harbor, Illinois, to Michigan City, Indiana, including the nearshore waters along Chicago and Northwest Indiana.

Forecasters warn that the combination of strong winds and high waves could capsize or damage vessels and reduce visibility across the lake. Mariners are strongly advised to remain in port, seek safe harbor, or secure their vessels until conditions subside.

This gale event follows several days of blustery fall weather around the Great Lakes, with forecasters expecting gradual improvement later Wednesday as winds diminish and waves slowly decrease.
