CHICAGO – Thunderstorms will bring a soggy stretch across Illinois through early next week, with rain chances holding steady at 40 to 60 percent across much of the Chicago area. Temperatures will also ease downward, slipping from the low 80s this weekend into the low 70s by Tuesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, storms will arrive in waves, meaning many hours will remain dry, but any cell that develops could bring heavy rain and brief lightning. Saturday will bring highs near 84 inland, with cooler readings along the Lake Michigan shore.
Sunday will carry a continued storm threat, especially in the afternoon and evening, with highs in the upper 70s. By Monday, another round of showers is possible as highs settle into the mid-70s. Drivers should be alert to sudden downpours that may reduce visibility on major routes like I-90 and I-55 during evening commutes.
Residents are advised to keep rain gear handy and avoid outdoor activities during thunderstorms. Lightning poses the biggest safety concern, especially at parks, festivals, and sporting events.
The unsettled pattern is expected to last until Tuesday evening, when drier conditions may begin to take hold midweek.
