Chicago, IL – The National Weather Service in Chicago reports that a quick-moving disturbance will bring a brief period of light snow across northern Illinois this evening, leading to potentially slippery travel conditions in some areas.

The snow is expected to begin late Wednesday afternoon and continue for a few hours before tapering off shortly after midnight. While accumulation totals will be minor, the NWS says the darker blue-shaded areas on the forecast map—including parts of Ottawa, DeKalb, Joliet, and Kankakee—could see up to an inch of snow.

Areas farther east, including northwest Indiana, may experience occasional flurries with localized slick spots, though significant impacts are not anticipated.

Forecasters caution that light snow combined with cold pavement temperatures could make untreated surfaces, bridges, and overpasses slippery. Reduced visibility and slowed travel are also possible during heavier bursts.

Motorists are urged to allow extra travel time, reduce speed, and check road conditions before heading out tonight. The Illinois Department of Transportation’s travel map at GettingAroundIllinois.com and 511in.org provide up-to-date road and weather information.

Snow is expected to end after midnight, with dry and cold weather returning by Thursday morning. Temperatures will remain in the upper 20s to low 30s overnight, limiting melting until Thursday afternoon.
