Chicago, IL – Forecasters are monitoring the potential for lake effect snow to develop across the Chicago metro area and northwest Indiana late Sunday night into Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago.

While confidence remains low in exact placement, forecasters say multiple scenarios are possible — ranging from light snow confined to northwest Indiana, to broader bands affecting northeast and east-central Illinois. The most typical setup for this time of year would favor heavier snow near Valparaiso and La Porte, with lighter accumulations closer to Chicago.

Localized bursts of snow could briefly reduce visibility and cause slick travel on untreated roads, particularly during the Monday morning commute. However, mild Lake Michigan water temperatures in the mid-50s may limit snow totals near the immediate lakeshore.

Most areas are not expected to see significant accumulation, though isolated spots could pick up several inches if persistent lake effect bands form.

Residents across Cook, Lake, Porter, and LaPorte counties should monitor updates through the weekend as small shifts in wind direction could drastically change where the snow develops.
