According to Loyola University, Sister Jean passed away after decades of service that made her a beloved presence on campus and a national figure in college basketball. The school described her as “someone who touched the lives of so many people,” asking for prayers for her family, the Loyola community, and all those inspired by her spirit.
Sister Jean, who turned 106 on August 23, became a household name during Loyola’s unforgettable 2018 NCAA Tournament run, when she cheered on the Ramblers to the Final Four. Known for her infectious smile and faith-filled optimism, she continued serving as team chaplain well into her later years.
Earlier this year, Loyola confirmed that Sister Jean had officially retired from her campus duties due to health concerns. “While Sister Jean is no longer able to be physically present on campus, she remains a beloved friend, trusted advisor, and loyal Rambler,” Loyola President Mark C. Reed said in a prior statement.
Funeral and memorial service details will be announced in the coming days.
