Chicago, Illinois – A Winter Weather Advisory is in effect across much of the Chicago metropolitan area and northern Illinois as overnight snowfall creates hazardous travel conditions through early Wednesday.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, the advisory remains in effect until 8 a.m. CST Wednesday, impacting Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry, Boone, Winnebago, DeKalb, and Ogle counties. Affected communities include Chicago, Aurora, Naperville, Elgin, Evanston, Schaumburg, Rockford, Waukegan, Crystal Lake, DeKalb, and Rochelle.
Forecasters say snow accumulations of up to 3 inches are expected across central Cook, DuPage, Kane, DeKalb, and Ogle counties. Farther north, including Lake, McHenry, Boone, and Winnebago counties, 2 to 5 inches of snow is possible.
The National Weather Service warns that heavier snow bands may develop overnight, particularly across northern portions of the advisory area. If these bands persist, localized snowfall totals could reach 4 to 5 inches, especially near and north of Interstates 88 and 290.
Road conditions are expected to become snow-covered and slick, with periods of low visibility, especially during heavier snowfall. The hazardous conditions are likely to impact the Wednesday morning commute, particularly in the northern Chicago metro area.
Motorists are urged to slow down and use caution, allow extra travel time, and be alert for rapidly changing conditions. Bridges and overpasses may become slick first.
