Chicago, IL – A Chicago man has been sentenced to twelve years in prison for providing fentanyl that caused a Naperville man’s fatal overdose. Shawn Smith, 33, pled guilty to drug-induced homicide, a Class X felony, in DuPage County. Judge Daniel Guerin handed down the sentence.
On November 27, 2022, Naperville police discovered the victim, a 23-year-old man, dead in his family’s home. Investigators linked the fatal dose of fentanyl and heroin to Smith. Undercover officers arrested Smith during a sting operation in December 2022.
An autopsy determined the victim died from fentanyl, heroin, diphenhydramine, and trazodone toxicity.
Smith must serve 75% of his twelve-year sentence before being eligible for parole. The case underscores the lethal dangers of fentanyl in Illinois communities.
