Naperville, IL – A judge ordered a Chicago man detained pre-trial after he allegedly attempted to grab a Naperville police officer’s gun following a high-speed chase.

According to DuPage County prosecutors, Devante Gunn, 32, led officers on a chase late Friday night after a traffic stop near Route 59 and North Aurora Road. Officers attempted to stop Gunn’s vehicle for suspended registration, but he allegedly sped away, reaching 68 mph in a 30-mph zone.

Police said Gunn abandoned the vehicle in an apartment complex parking lot and fled on foot. Officers pursued him and, after a struggle, deployed tasers to subdue him. Authorities allegedly found a loaded 9mm handgun in Gunn’s waistband. During his arrest, Gunn allegedly attempted to grab an officer’s holstered firearm.

DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert Berlin commended Naperville police for safely apprehending Gunn, emphasizing the dangers officers face. Naperville Police Chief Jason Arres reaffirmed the department’s commitment to keeping illegal firearms off the streets.

Gunn faces multiple felony and misdemeanor charges. His next court date is set for March 31, 2025.
