Urbana, IL – A Chicago man was arrested Tuesday in connection with an alleged theft at a Walgreens in Champaign’s Campustown.

According to University of Illinois Police, 29-year-old Geovontae Galloway was apprehended after officers responded to a shoplifting report at the Walgreens on East Green Street at 12:36 p.m. The store manager reported three men stealing merchandise and placing it in their backpacks. Based on descriptions, officers linked them to a series of previous retail thefts in the area.

Using security footage and automated license plate readers, officers located the suspects’ vehicle. Similar thefts had occurred earlier in the day at another Walgreens in Urbana. A Champaign County Sheriff’s Deputy apprehended Galloway as he fled another Walgreens location. The other two suspects escaped.

Police report recovering thousands of dollars worth of stolen merchandise and a firearm from the suspect’s vehicle. Galloway reportedly admitted to the thefts and was taken to Champaign County Jail.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information is encouraged to contact the University of Illinois Police Department.
