La Porte County, IN – A 29-year-old bicyclist from Chicago was killed Friday morning in a crash involving a semi-truck on State Road 39, according to the La Porte County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies reported the incident occurred around 11:59 a.m. Friday, Sept. 19, near the intersection of SR 39 and CR 900 North. Authorities said a group of cyclists was riding south on the highway shoulder when a commercial motor vehicle, driven by 64-year-old Charles E. Akemon of Demotte, moved left into a passing zone to go around them.

According to investigators, one of the cyclists, Mason R. Anderson, 29, attempted a left turn onto CR 900 North as the semi was overtaking the group. Deputies said Akemon steered further left to avoid the cyclist, but Anderson collided with the trailer.

Anderson was pronounced dead at the scene. The sheriff’s office noted that toxicology test results are pending and no further details are available at this time.

The investigation involved multiple responding agencies, including La Porte County EMS, the La Porte County Coroner’s Office, Indiana State Police, and local volunteer fire departments.

Authorities have not announced any charges or citations related to the crash as of Saturday morning.
