Chicago, Illinois – A chilly and blustery start to Sunday is giving way to a brief stretch of milder weather in the Chicago area, but winter is set to make a quick comeback by midweek with snow showers and falling temperatures.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, flurries and light snow showers moved through the area this morning, mainly producing minor impacts. Gusty winds are lingering today, keeping conditions cold and brisk. High temperatures will stay in the lower to mid-30s, with untreated roads and sidewalks remaining slick in spots early.
Conditions improve noticeably Monday and Tuesday as milder air moves into northern Illinois. Highs Monday climb into the low to mid-40s, followed by even warmer temperatures Tuesday, when highs are expected to reach the mid to upper 40s and possibly low 50s in parts of the Chicago metro. Aside from spotty light showers or sprinkles Tuesday, travel impacts during the early week look limited.
That break from winter will be short-lived. Colder air returns Wednesday as winds increase and snow showers redevelop. Wind-whipped snow showers may create reduced visibility and slick roads, particularly during the evening commute. Highs Wednesday fall back into the lower to mid-30s, with wind chills dropping into the 20s.
Lake effect snow may also develop late Wednesday night into early Thursday, though exact placement remains uncertain. Some areas could see light accumulations, while others remain largely dry.
Drivers should be prepared for rapidly changing conditions midweek, especially during peak travel times. Residents are encouraged to take advantage of the milder early-week weather to prepare for the return of wintry conditions.
Additional advisories or snow-related alerts may be issued as confidence increases in midweek snow coverage and impacts.
