Illinois skies across the Chicago metro are heavy with fog and damp air this morning, but meteorologists warn the atmosphere is quickly becoming unstable. Wet pavement and gray clouds may look calm now, yet stronger storms are expected to develop later today.

The National Weather Service in Chicago reports a significant thunderstorm risk across northern Illinois and northwest Indiana, especially near and south of Interstate 80.

Storms developing this afternoon and evening could bring damaging winds up to 70 mph, hail up to 2 inches in diameter, and the potential for isolated tornadoes.

Drivers across the south suburbs, including Joliet, Kankakee, and areas along I-80 and I-57, should stay alert for rapidly changing conditions once storms begin forming. Strong cells are expected to move east at 30 to 40 mph, meaning weather could deteriorate quickly during the evening commute.

Heavy rainfall is another concern. Localized downpours could trigger brief flash flooding, especially in low-lying streets or areas with poor drainage.

Meanwhile, a Flood Warning remains in effect for Thorn Creek near Thornton, where minor flooding is expected. Water levels are forecast to rise above flood stage before gradually falling later tonight.

Rain may continue into early morning hours before cooler air pushes into the region.

Conditions improve briefly Thursday with sunshine and highs near 46ยฐF, though another round of showers arrives Thursday night. Strong winds could also develop later in the week with gusts exceeding 40 mph.

Looking ahead to the weekend of March 14โ€“15, colder air returns with snow chances Saturday before rain and snow mix again Sunday.

With spring break travel increasing nationwide, motorists across the Chicago region should stay weather-aware today.
