Illinois – Headlights glow through a gray wall of fog across Chicago this morning as drizzle and approaching thunderstorms turn streets slick across the metro. Visibility has dipped to around three-quarters of a mile in some neighborhoods, slowing travel along the Kennedy Expressway, I-55, and Lake Shore Drive.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect through late morning as widespread mist lingers across the city and suburbs. Showers and thunderstorms will develop through midday, with rain chances near 80 percent and temperatures climbing toward 69 degrees.
Wet pavement and patchy fog could slow traffic across Cook County during the late morning commute. Drivers should allow extra travel time on major routes including I-90, I-94, and the Stevenson Expressway. A few thunderstorms may briefly produce heavier downpours that reduce visibility even further.
Storm activity gradually eases later today, though scattered showers could linger into the evening. Breezy southwest winds may gust near 25 mph at times, especially near the lakefront.
Conditions improve heading into the weekend. Temperatures slip slightly Saturday with highs near 62 degrees as breezy west winds develop. Spotty morning showers are possible before partial sunshine returns by afternoon.
Bright spring sunshine takes over Sunday with highs near 58 degrees and a brisk southwest breeze. Early Sunday morning also brings the seasonal clock change as Daylight Saving Time begins at 2 a.m., shifting sunsets later into the evening.
Milder weather continues into early next week. Sunshine Monday pushes highs into the mid-60s across Chicago before another round of showers returns Tuesday afternoon.
Meteorologists say larger spring warmups may build across the Midwest later next week. Some longer-range outlooks hint at temperatures climbing far above average across the Plains and Midwest.
If you’re heading out today, expect foggy stretches and wet pavement across Chicago streets. What are conditions like in your neighborhood this morning?
