Chicago, IL – Flakes are flying and traffic lights are glowing against a curtain of snow across the Chicago metro area this morning. A Winter Weather Advisory from the National Weather Service in Chicago remains in effect until 9 a.m. Sunday, as a quick-moving system brings widespread snow to northern Illinois — from McHenry and Lake counties south through DuPage and Cook.
Total accumulations are expected between 2 and 6 inches, with the highest amounts near the I-88 corridor. The heaviest snow continues through dawn, then gradually tapers midmorning. Gusty north winds up to 20 mph may cause blowing snow and brief whiteout conditions, especially in open areas west of the city.
Drivers should plan for slick roads and reduced visibility on key routes including I-55, I-90, and I-294, as plows work to clear the morning accumulation. Flights at O’Hare and Midway could see minor delays as crews de-ice runways.
Monday brings a sharp cooldown — highs near 28°F under partly sunny skies — before another chance of light snow Tuesday night into Wednesday. Models hint at additional clipper systems across the Great Lakes between Dec. 11–17, possibly delivering more bursts of snow as Arctic air surges east.
