Chicago, IL – Drivers across northern Illinois could face rapidly worsening travel conditions Thursday evening as powerful winds and a sharp temperature drop follow a passing storm system, creating a flash-freeze risk on untreated roads.

According to the National Weather Service, a strong low-pressure system will move through the region Thursday, bringing southerly wind gusts of 40 to 45 mph during the morning before winds shift west and remain strong through the evening. Periods of rain earlier in the day are expected to transition to gusty snow showers and squalls late in the afternoon and evening as temperatures plunge from the 40s into the 20s.

The combination of falling temperatures and lingering moisture may cause pavement to freeze quickly, leading to slick spots on roads, bridges, and sidewalks. Brief bursts of snow could sharply reduce visibility, especially during the evening commute. High-profile vehicles may struggle on north-south roads, and unsecured outdoor items could be blown around.

Impacts are expected across a wide area, including Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, Will, McHenry, DeKalb, LaSalle, Kendall, Grundy, Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois, Ogle, Lee, Boone, Winnebago, and nearby northwest Indiana counties.

Motorists are urged to slow down, allow extra travel time, and avoid unnecessary trips Thursday evening. Wind-related advisories and additional statements may be issued as conditions evolve into the night.
