Illinois wakes up under a sharp, bone-dry cold that bites through coats and gloves. Sidewalks crunch under frozen patches, winds whip between buildings, and any exposed skin stings within minutes. This is a dangerous start to the week for Chicago as winter tightens its hold.

According to the National Weather Service Chicago, very cold conditions continue today, with highs only between 6° and 14°. Wind chills remain the main concern, dropping as low as -10° to -20°, especially during the morning and evening hours. Early lake-effect snow remains possible near Porter County, while northern Illinois stays mostly dry but frigid.

Travelers should plan ahead. Gusty winds can briefly reduce visibility where light snow blows across open roads, especially south of the Kankakee River. Drivers should slow down, increase following distance, and watch for black ice on bridges and untreated streets. If you’re heading out, limit exposure time and keep emergency cold-weather supplies in your vehicle.

The cold lingers tonight, with lows dipping between -5° and +8°. Monday remains blustery, though temperatures slowly recover into the low to mid-20s. While it won’t feel warm, the worst of the Arctic punch begins to ease.

Looking ahead, Tuesday and Wednesday bring a noticeable moderation, with highs climbing into the 30s and near 40° by midweek. Clouds increase Wednesday night as another system approaches. Rain showers are possible Wednesday night into Thursday, followed by breezy, colder conditions late Thursday and Friday, signaling another winter reminder before Christmas travel ramps up.
