Chicago, IL – A powerful cold front will sweep through northern Illinois tonight, bringing damaging winds and bursts of snow through Wednesday evening, according to the National Weather Service in Chicago.
The strongest gusts are expected Wednesday during the day, when winds may reach 50–60 mph, creating hazardous travel conditions across the region. The NWS said wind-whipped snow showers and flurries could briefly reduce visibility, especially along Interstate 80 and other open stretches of road.
Officials urge residents to secure outdoor decorations, garbage bins, and loose furniture before the front moves through. Drivers, particularly those in high-profile vehicles, should use caution on north–south roads due to strong crosswinds and occasional whiteout-like conditions.
Temperatures will also plunge into the 30s by Wednesday afternoon, with wind chills expected to fall into the teens by nightfall.
Thanksgiving travelers should plan for slower commutes, scattered power outages, and possible flight delays as the front passes.
