Chicago, Illinois – Periods of showers and thunderstorms are expected across northern Illinois Friday, with some storms potentially becoming strong before conditions improve this weekend.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, multiple waves of storms may move through the region Friday into early Saturday morning.
While widespread severe weather is not expected, a few storms could briefly become strong, producing gusty winds and heavy rainfall.
Cities including Chicago, Aurora, Joliet, Naperville, and Gary, Indiana could see thunderstorms as the system moves through the area.
Drivers traveling along major routes such as Interstate 90, Interstate 94, Interstate 55, and Interstate 88 may encounter reduced visibility, wet roads, and occasional lightning during heavier showers.
Temperatures Friday are expected to remain unseasonably warm, with highs ranging from the upper 60s to mid-70s across northern Illinois, including the Chicago metro area.
Storms may continue in waves through Friday evening and overnight before gradually tapering off early Saturday morning.
By Saturday, rain is expected to end during the morning hours, followed by cooler temperatures and breezy conditions as a cold front moves through the region.
High temperatures Saturday are forecast to reach the mid-50s to mid-60s, with falling temperatures later in the day.
The remainder of the weekend is expected to turn mostly dry with sunshine and breezy conditions Sunday, with highs around the low 60s.
Looking ahead to early next week, another weather system may bring scattered storms back to the region by Tuesday, along with continued temperature swings.
