Chicago, IL – Skies over northern Illinois could once again glow with the northern lights tonight, as a strong G4 (Severe) geomagnetic storm continues while clear, calm weather sets the stage for perfect viewing conditions.
According to the US National Weather Service Chicago and the NOAA Space Weather Prediction Center, the aurora borealis may again reach into Illinois, with visibility possible from the Chicago suburbs northward if skies remain clear through the late evening.
Meteorologists say mostly clear skies are expected overnight with lows ranging from the upper 20s inland to upper 30s near Lake Michigan, ideal for stargazing. The best window for aurora viewing is between 9 p.m. and 1 a.m., away from city lights and toward the northern horizon.
The rest of the week brings mild, dry conditions, with sunny skies Thursday through Saturday. Highs will climb from the 50s Thursday to the lower 70s Saturday, before cooler air returns Sunday with highs in the 40s and 50s. Rain chances hold off until early next week.
If you capture the aurora over Chicago or Lake Michigan, share your photos — this could be another rare and spectacular Midwest sky show.
