Chicago, Illinois – Areas of fog are expected to affect the Chicago region Friday morning, with mild temperatures continuing through the weekend before a sharp drop arrives behind a cold front late Sunday.
According to the National Weather Service Chicago, patchy fog and drizzle may reduce visibility during the morning commute, with another chance for fog late tonight into Saturday morning. Friday highs are forecast to range from 44 to 57 degrees, remaining well above seasonal averages for late December.
Temperatures will stay mild Saturday, with highs between 41 and 49 degrees, before warming further Sunday. Forecast guidance shows Sunday highs reaching 50 to 62 degrees, ahead of an approaching cold front. The Weather Service notes that showers and a few thunderstorms are possible Sunday, mainly south of Interstate 80, as the front moves through the region.
Behind the cold front, temperatures are expected to fall rapidly Sunday night. Monday morning lows may drop into the low to mid 20s, with daytime highs only reaching 22 to 29 degrees. Gusty winds may make conditions feel colder, particularly during the morning commute.
A brief chance of morning snow showers is possible Monday as colder air settles in, though no significant accumulation is indicated at this time. By Tuesday, temperatures are forecast to remain below freezing, with highs between 27 and 32 degrees and lows in the mid teens to mid 20s.
The Weather Service advises drivers to use caution during periods of fog, when visibility may change quickly, and to prepare for the abrupt transition from mild to winterlike conditions early next week. Residents are encouraged to stay updated on forecast changes as the timing and impacts of the cold front become clearer.
