Chicago, Illinois — Skies will gradually clear across northern Illinois Wednesday as a cold start gives way to a modest warming trend and intermittent chances for light snow late in the week, according to the National Weather Service Chicago.

Forecasters say clouds will clear from northwest to southeast through the day Wednesday, with a few lingering flurries possible near Lake Michigan, especially along Lake Shore Drive and nearby lakeshore communities. High temperatures will remain cold, ranging from 24 to 28 degrees, keeping untreated surfaces chilly despite improving visibility.

On Thursday, warmer air begins to move in, bringing highs between 28 and 36 degrees. There is a chance for light snow late Thursday morning into the afternoon, particularly along major travel corridors such as Interstate 90, Interstate 94, and Interstate 88. Snow amounts are expected to be light, but brief slick spots could develop during periods of precipitation.

Friday brings the warmest temperatures of the stretch, with highs climbing to 36 to 42 degrees across much of the Chicago metro area and surrounding suburbs. A chance of snow early Friday may transition to scattered snow showers during the afternoon before conditions dry out. Any snow that falls is expected to be minor, though visibility could briefly be reduced during passing showers.

By Saturday and Sunday, mostly dry conditions are expected to return. Saturday highs will range from 25 to 33 degrees, followed by slightly milder temperatures Sunday in the low to mid-30s. Overnight lows through the weekend will remain cold, generally in the teens to lower 20s, allowing for refreezing where moisture lingers.

Travel impacts are expected to be limited, but commuters should remain cautious during Thursday and Friday morning periods, especially on bridges and elevated roadways along I-90, I-94, I-80, and I-55.

For commuters, students, and outdoor workers, the main takeaway is a gradual warmup with brief snow chances late week, followed by a quieter weekend.
