Drivers across Joliet, Aurora, Kankakee and surrounding communities are being urged to prepare for sudden visibility changes during the early commute. Fog is most widespread in low-lying areas and open stretches of highway, where conditions can deteriorate quickly within a short distance.
With temperatures hovering below freezing, slick spots are also possible on bridges and overpasses, especially along I-294 and I-88. Elevated surfaces cool more quickly and may develop a light glaze where moisture settles. Motorists should use low-beam headlights, reduce speed and allow extra following distance.
The fog is expected to gradually erode shortly after sunrise, though localized pockets may linger until around 8 a.m. Conditions should improve steadily through mid-morning as daylight and slightly warmer air help lift the shallow fog layer.
While widespread ice accumulation is not anticipated, even minor slick areas can lead to accidents during peak travel times. Officials advise drivers to remain alert for changing conditions and avoid abrupt braking.
Commuters heading into Chicago from the southwest suburbs should check traffic updates before departing and plan for minor delays where visibility drops.
