Chicago, Illinois – An overnight snowfall is expected to create hazardous travel across far northern Illinois, with slick roads likely to affect the Wednesday morning commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect from 8 p.m. this evening through 6 a.m. Wednesday for Winnebago, Boone, McHenry, and Lake counties. Snow is expected to develop this evening and continue overnight, with total accumulations ranging from 2 to 5 inches. The highest snowfall totals are expected near the Wisconsin–Illinois state line.

Communities including Rockford, Belvidere, Woodstock, Crystal Lake, McHenry, Waukegan, Gurnee, Mundelein, Buffalo Grove, and Algonquin are likely to see steady snowfall overnight. Roads may quickly become snow-covered, especially on untreated surfaces, ramps, and bridges. Even brief periods of heavier snow could reduce visibility late tonight.

The timing of the snow raises concern for the early Wednesday commute, when drivers may encounter slick and slow-moving conditions across major routes and local roads. School and work travel could be impacted if snowfall rates increase overnight.

Drivers are urged to slow down, increase following distance, and check road conditions before heading out. Pedestrians should also watch for icy sidewalks and steps early Wednesday.

Snow is expected to taper off toward daybreak, but lingering impacts may continue into the morning. Additional advisories remain possible if conditions change overnight.
