Chicago, Illinois – Drivers along and north of I-90 could encounter slick overpasses and reduced visibility before the Saturday afternoon commute as a narrow snow band drifts across far northern Illinois.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, up to 1 inch of accumulation is possible on colder surfaces, especially near the Wisconsin state line and north of I-90. The highest snowfall rates are expected between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Saturday, with brief bursts capable of coating untreated elevated roadways and ramps.
Across northern Illinois, state transportation crews are monitoring bridges and overpasses where pavement temperatures remain cold enough for quick accumulation. Elevated stretches of I-90, I-94, I-294 and portions of US-20 face the greatest risk for slippery travel. In McHenry, Lake and northern Cook counties, visibility could briefly drop during heavier snow bursts, slowing traffic and increasing crash risk.
Within Chicago, impacts should remain localized, but drivers on exposed ramps and flyovers could notice patchy slick spots through midafternoon. Metra riders may see minor delays if snowfall intensity briefly increases north of the city.
Motorists should reduce speeds, allow extra stopping distance and avoid sudden lane changes on elevated structures. IDOT crews advise checking road conditions before departure and preparing for changing conditions within minutes as the snow band shifts slightly north or south.
Lingering flurries may continue into early evening, but the primary travel window for slick conditions remains late Saturday morning through 3 p.m. Additional updates will be issued if the snow band strengthens or expands farther south.
