Chicago, Illinois – A period of steady, fluffy snow is expected to create slippery travel conditions across Chicago this evening.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, snow is forecast to develop across the area between 4 and 6 p.m., with accumulations of up to 1 inch possible. Forecasters say temperatures during snowfall will range from 15 to 20 degrees, allowing snow to readily accumulate on untreated roadways.

The snow is expected to end from west to east by around midnight, but impacts may linger as an Arctic cold front moves in overnight. The front is expected to bring northwest winds gusting over 35 mph, along with rapidly falling temperatures.

The National Weather Service warns that road conditions could deteriorate quickly, especially during the evening commute. Drivers along Interstate 90, Interstate 94, Interstate 290, and Interstate 55, as well as city streets and ramps, may encounter slick spots, particularly on bridges and overpasses.

Officials advise motorists to slow down, increase following distance, and remain alert for changing conditions. Blowing snow and falling temperatures late tonight could allow surfaces to refreeze even after snowfall ends.

Forecasters note that while snowfall amounts are modest, timing and cold air arrival increase travel risk, especially for those commuting or traveling later this evening.

Residents are encouraged to stay updated on conditions and use caution if traveling tonight.
