Chicago, Illinois – A rain and snow mix is moving across the Chicago area this morning, with blustery conditions and wind-driven snow showers expected later today and tonight, creating periods of slick and hazardous travel.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, rain may mix with or briefly change to wet snow this morning, especially across far northern Illinois. Areas north of the Rochelle-to-Waukegan line could see up to 1 to 2 inches of slushy accumulation on grassy or colder surfaces before precipitation ends around midday. Elsewhere, mainly rain or wet snow is expected with little to no accumulation.

By this afternoon, colder air will move in behind the system, bringing blustery conditions and isolated, non-accumulating snow showers. The more impactful period is expected this evening through early Sunday, when wind-whipped snow showers or brief squalls may develop across much of the region.

Forecasters say localized coatings up to 1 inch of snow are possible overnight, particularly under heavier snow bursts. Gusty winds may cause rapid reductions in visibility, leading to localized hazardous travel, especially on untreated roads, bridges, and overpasses.

High temperatures today are expected to reach the mid-30s to near 40 degrees, before falling into the lower 20s overnight. Wind chills will make it feel colder, increasing the risk of refreezing on wet surfaces.

Looking ahead, temperatures will rebound early next week, with highs climbing into the 40s to near 50 degrees Monday and Tuesday. Another system midweek could bring scattered snow showers and cooler temperatures back to the area by Wednesday, with lake-effect snow possible late Wednesday night in northwest Indiana.

This forecast may be especially relevant for evening commuters, overnight workers, and early Sunday travelers across the Chicago metro area.
