Chicago, IL – An Illinois State Police squad car was struck Thursday night while a trooper was assisting at a crash scene on Interstate 88, renewing concerns about Move Over Law compliance across the state.

According to Illinois State Police, the crash happened around 7:34 p.m. Thursday on I-88 as an ISP trooper was stopped on the left shoulder investigating a single-vehicle rollover. The trooper had emergency lights activated and was positioned behind the crashed vehicle to provide protection.

Police said a tollway maintenance truck, which had also stopped to assist, was parked behind the ISP squad car when it was struck by another vehicle approaching the scene. Authorities say the driver failed to slow down or move over despite the presence of emergency vehicles.

Both vehicles sustained minor damage, and no injuries were reported. The trooper and the tollway maintenance driver were inside their vehicles at the time of the crash but were not hurt. The at-fault driver was issued multiple traffic citations, including a violation of Scott’s Law, Illinois’ Move Over Law. The investigation remains ongoing.

Scott’s Law requires drivers to slow down and move over when approaching emergency vehicles, tow trucks, or highway maintenance vehicles with flashing lights. Violations carry fines ranging from $250 to $10,000, mandatory court appearances, and possible license suspension—especially if a crash occurs.

Illinois State Police report that in 2025, there were 12 Scott’s Law-related crashes with one fatality. So far in 2026, seven troopers have already been injured in 12 Move Over crashes, underscoring the ongoing risk to roadside workers.

ISP officials continue urging drivers to stay alert, reduce speed, and move over whenever possible.
