Chicago, Illinois – Illinois State Police arrested a Chicago man after an alleged road-rage shooting on Interstate 55 that sent a victim to the hospital.

According to Illinois State Police, Division of Criminal Investigation Zone 1 agents arrested 22-year-old Daniel Zaragoza of Chicago in connection with a shooting reported Thursday morning on northbound I-55 near Damen Avenue.

Troopers responded to reports of an expressway shooting at approximately 8:36 a.m. Investigators said the incident stemmed from a road-rage confrontation during which Zaragoza allegedly fired a weapon at another vehicle, striking the victim.

The victim was transported to a nearby hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

Following a rapid investigation, ISP agents identified Zaragoza as the suspect. He was taken into custody later that evening without incident, according to state police.

On Friday, the case was presented to the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office. Zaragoza was charged with one count of aggravated battery with a firearm, a Class X felony. He remains in custody pending his first court appearance. No additional charges have been announced.

Illinois State Police emphasized that aggressive driving incidents can escalate quickly and urged motorists not to engage with other drivers. Authorities advise drivers who believe they are being followed or harassed to call 911 or drive to the nearest police station.

The shooting caused concern for commuters traveling through the I-55 corridor during the morning rush, a heavily traveled route for workers and students entering the city.

Additional information will be released as it becomes available. The investigation remains ongoing.

Zaragoza is presumed innocent. The charges are not evidence of guilt and must be proven beyond a reasonable doubt in a court of law.
