Chicago, IL – Gloomy weather featuring fog and drizzle is expected to arrive this afternoon across the Chicago area and persist through Christmas morning.
According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, drizzle will develop later today, followed by widespread fog tonight. Reduced visibility is expected in many areas, particularly south of Interstate 80, which could affect Christmas Eve and early Christmas Day travel.
Temperatures will remain above normal through Saturday, with highs ranging from the low 40s to upper 50s depending on the day. Christmas Day highs are expected in the upper 30s to upper 40s, with continued fog and occasional drizzle possible during the morning hours.
Another round of wetter weather is forecast to arrive Thursday night into Friday, with rain chances increasing to 60–80 percent. Despite the rain, temperatures will stay mild for late December, remaining well above freezing.
Conditions will change noticeably Sunday as a strong cold front moves through the region. Forecasters say much colder air and blustery winds will follow, with high temperatures dropping into the mid-30s to mid-40s. Wind chills could fall into the single digits to near 10 degrees by Sunday and into early next week.
The National Weather Service advises drivers to use caution during foggy periods, allowing extra travel time and watching for slick spots where drizzle persists.
This forecast is especially relevant for holiday travelers, commuters, and early Christmas morning drivers navigating reduced visibility.
Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts as timing of rain and the weekend cooldown becomes clearer.
