Chicago, IL – Thunderstorms are set to shake up northern Illinois Tuesday, September 23, bringing damaging winds and hail risks for commuters.

According to the National Weather Service, storms may develop Tuesday afternoon near and south of Interstate 80 and across far northern Illinois. Some storms could produce wind gusts up to 60 mph and hail up to a quarter in size. Travelers are urged to monitor road conditions closely, especially along I-80 and I-90, where delays are likely.

Scattered thunderstorms may linger into Tuesday night, with showers continuing off and on through Wednesday. While widespread severe weather is not expected, repeated rainfall could slow traffic and disrupt outdoor activities. Residents should secure loose objects and stay weather-aware.

The five-day outlook shows an unsettled start to fall:

  • Wednesday, Sept. 24: Showers likely, with a high near 70. Gusty winds possible.
  • Thursday, Sept. 25: Cloudy with lingering showers. Cooler, with a high near 68.
  • Friday, Sept. 26: Partly sunny. High near 72, lows in the low 60s.
  • Saturday, Sept. 27: Mostly sunny. High near 74. Calmer fall weather returns.
