Chicago, Illinois – Another round of fluffy snow is expected across northern Illinois later Sunday afternoon through the evening, potentially leading to hazardous travel conditions, according to the National Weather Service Chicago.
In a social media update posted Sunday morning, the National Weather Service said temperatures in the teens to near 20 degrees will allow snow to accumulate on roadways, especially during periods of reduced visibility. Snowfall amounts are expected to range from a dusting to around 2 inches, with the greatest potential north of Peru, Illinois, to Fowler, Indiana.
Forecasters noted that west winds gusting between 35 and 40 mph late this afternoon and evening could cause shallow blowing and drifting snow, further reducing visibility at times. While snowfall totals are expected to remain relatively light, the combination of cold temperatures, wind, and snow-covered roads may make travel slick and unpredictable.
The National Weather Service advised drivers to check road conditions before traveling, take it slow, and increase following distance while on the road. Illinois road conditions are available through getaroundillinois.com or by dialing 511.
A separate outlook shared by the National Weather Service shows much colder temperatures arriving early in the week following Sunday’s snowfall. The five-day forecast highlights wind chills well below zero Monday and Tuesday, with some moderation expected by midweek.
Officials emphasized that even minor snowfall events can cause travel problems when temperatures are cold enough for snow to stick, especially during evening hours when traffic volumes remain high.
