Chicago, IL – A gradual warmup begins Monday across the Chicago area after a frigid overnight period, with temperatures expected to climb into the 30s and 40s before colder and blustery conditions return later in the week.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, overnight lows Monday dipped between 12 and 20 degrees, with patchy freezing fog possible west of the Fox River. Daytime conditions improve slightly Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs ranging from 34 to 39 degrees across Cook County and much of northern Illinois.

Forecasters say temperatures will continue to moderate midweek as southerly winds develop ahead of an approaching cold front. By Thursday, highs are expected to peak in the low to mid-40s, bringing the warmest conditions of the week. Breezy winds are also expected, which could impact travel, particularly for high-profile vehicles.

Rain showers are forecast to move into the region Thursday and Thursday evening as the cold front crosses the area. While widespread heavy rainfall is not anticipated, wet road conditions could affect the evening commute.

Behind the front, colder air quickly returns. Temperatures are forecast to fall sharply Thursday night, with lows dropping into the single digits and teens by early Friday. Friday morning is expected to be blustery and colder, with daytime highs only reaching between 25 and 29 degrees.

Meteorologists note that the late-week cooldown may feel more pronounced due to gusty winds, creating wind chills in the teens during morning hours.

Residents are advised to remain cautious during the overnight freezing fog potential early in the week and to prepare for rapidly changing conditions heading into Thursday night and Friday. Drivers should allow extra time during wet and windy periods later this week.
