Chicago, IL – Drivers across the Chicago area should prepare for reduced visibility overnight and into Friday morning as fog and drizzle return to the region, potentially complicating post-Christmas travel before a sharp turn toward colder weather next week.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, another round of rain, drizzle, and fog is expected tonight, with fog developing overnight and lingering into the Friday morning commute. Low temperatures tonight are expected to range from 36 to 45 degrees, warm enough to prevent icing but cool enough for dense fog to form in spots.

Friday will remain mild for late December, with highs ranging from 45 to near 60 degrees, especially south of I-80. Patchy morning fog may gradually improve, but damp conditions could persist through parts of the day.

Saturday is expected to bring limited sunshine, with highs again reaching the mid-40s to near 60 degrees. However, conditions begin to change Sunday as gusty winds increase, with wind chills dropping into the teens and 20s by late day. A few rain showers may develop Sunday afternoon or evening.

By Monday, the National Weather Service says much colder air moves in, bringing flurries or light snow showers and daytime highs only in the low to mid-20s, with overnight lows falling into the teens.

While no major winter storm is expected for Chicago this weekend, officials urge drivers to use caution in fog, slow down, and allow extra stopping distance. The abrupt temperature drop next week could also lead to refreezing on untreated roads if moisture remains.

Residents are encouraged to monitor updated forecasts as colder, more winterlike conditions settle back into the region.
