Chicago, IL – Swimmers and beachgoers are being urged to use caution today and Thursday morning as a high risk of rip currents remains in effect along Lake Michigan, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) in Chicago.

The agency warned that strong currents will create dangerous swimming conditions at area beaches through Thursday morning. Officials stress that people should avoid entering the water during this period due to the heightened risk.

After Thursday, conditions are expected to shift. According to NWS, a stretch of drier and warmer weather will move in, lasting through the upcoming weekend. High temperatures will rise into the upper 70s on Friday and could reach the mid-80s on Saturday and Sunday, marking a significant warmup after the midweek cool-down.

Forecasters note that Thursday’s highs will remain in the upper 60s to mid-70s, with cooler overnight lows dipping into the lower 50s. By Friday, sunnier skies will dominate, setting up a sunny and unseasonably warm weekend across the region.

Travelers and outdoor planners are encouraged to prepare for the improved weekend weather, while those visiting Lake Michigan beaches should remain alert to water safety advisories through Thursday morning.
