Chicago, IL – Scattered showers with isolated thunderstorms are expected across parts of Illinois and northwest Indiana this afternoon, with some storms potentially strong enough to produce gusty winds and small hail.

According to the US National Weather Service Chicago, storms will mainly affect areas south of the Chicago metro and into northwest Indiana through 5 p.m. Tuesday, September 23. Forecasters warn that all thunderstorms could bring cloud-to-ground lightning and heavy downpours, while the strongest storms may generate damaging wind gusts and hail.

The weather service advises residents to remain indoors if thunder is heard and to have multiple ways to receive severe weather alerts. Areas highlighted in the advisory include Joliet, Aurora, Ottawa, Wateska, Gary, and surrounding counties.

Meteorologists note that storms are moving east at roughly 20 miles per hour, with the greatest risk during the afternoon commute. Even brief downpours could create slick roads and reduced visibility for drivers.

Residents are urged to monitor local updates for any changes in storm intensity or coverage.
