Chicago, Illinois – Temperatures could crash by as much as 20 degrees within an hour Thursday afternoon as severe storms erupt across northern Illinois, creating dangerous conditions during the evening commute.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, storms will develop along a fast-moving cold front beginning around 1 p.m. and intensify through 9 p.m. The most dangerous window for severe weather is expected between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m., especially along and south of I-80, including Joliet, Kankakee, and northwest Indiana.

Storms may produce damaging wind gusts capable of downing tree limbs, along with hail large enough to dent vehicles. The most intense cells could generate hail over 2 inches in diameter and a limited tornado threat, mainly south of the I-80 corridor toward Pontiac and into central Illinois.

Chicago and areas north of I-88 may see storms earlier in the afternoon, followed by a sharp temperature drop from the 70s into the 40s by early evening. Roads could quickly become hazardous as heavy rain reduces visibility and strong winds impact high-profile vehicles along I-55, I-57, and I-94.

Residents should secure outdoor items, avoid unnecessary travel during peak storm hours, and ensure multiple ways to receive warnings. Severe conditions will taper after 9 p.m., followed by much cooler air heading into Friday.
