Chicago, IL – The National Weather Service in Chicago has issued a Frost Advisory for much of northern and central Illinois, in effect until 9 a.m. Thursday, as temperatures are expected to drop as low as 30 degrees overnight.

According to the NWS, the advisory includes Livingston, Ford, Iroquois, Boone, DeKalb, La Salle, Lee, Ogle, Winnebago, Grundy, and Kankakee Counties. Cities within the affected area include Rockford, DeKalb, Ottawa, Kankakee, Pontiac, Dixon, and La Salle.

Forecasters warn that clear skies and calm winds will allow temperatures to plummet near the freezing mark, creating ideal conditions for frost formation. Sensitive plants, flowers, and late-season crops may be damaged or killed if not protected.

Residents are encouraged to cover tender vegetation, bring potted plants indoors, and disconnect outdoor hoses to prevent damage.

This frost event is expected to mark a seasonal turning point, signaling the end of the growing season for much of northern Illinois. Temperatures will recover slightly into the upper 40s and low 50s by Thursday afternoon, but another cold night is likely Friday, possibly bringing additional frost.
