Chicago, IL – Drivers across northern Illinois are being warned to use extra caution tonight as areas of freezing fog are expected to develop, particularly east of Interstate 55, according to the National Weather Service (NWS) Chicago.

Forecasters say the fog could form late Thursday night into early Friday morning, reducing visibility to less than half a mile and creating slick spots on bridges, overpasses, and untreated roads. With temperatures dropping into the single digits, even light moisture may freeze rapidly on contact.

According to the NWS, the main threat area includes communities stretching from Aurora and Joliet eastward through Chicago, Kankakee, and into northwest Indiana. Drivers may encounter sudden changes in visibility, especially near open fields and low-lying areas.

Officials urge motorists to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and increase following distance. Pedestrians are also advised to use caution on sidewalks and parking lots that may become icy overnight.

The freezing fog risk is expected to persist through at least 3 a.m. CST Friday, with conditions gradually improving by daybreak as winds shift and temperatures stabilize.

Travelers using I-55, I-57, and I-80 should plan for potential slowdowns and use extra caution during the Friday morning commute.
