Kankakee, Illinois – Drivers across east-central Illinois and northwest Indiana are waking up to hazardous travel conditions as dense fog blankets the region Thursday morning.

According to the National Weather Service in Chicago, a Dense Fog Advisory remains in effect until 9 a.m. CDT (10 a.m. EDT) for Kankakee, Livingston, Iroquois, and Ford Counties in Illinois, as well as Newton, Jasper, and Benton Counties in Indiana. Visibility in these areas has dropped to a quarter mile or less, creating dangerous conditions for early commuters.

Major routes including I-57, U.S. 24, and State Road 55 could see slowed traffic and increased crash risk due to limited visibility. The advisory affects cities such as Kankakee, Watseka, Paxton, Morocco, and Rensselaer.

Drivers are urged to slow down, use low-beam headlights, and maintain extra distance between vehicles. If possible, delay travel until conditions improve later this morning.

This advisory follows a humid overnight period that allowed fog to rapidly form before sunrise. While conditions are expected to gradually clear by midmorning, additional advisories may be issued if fog lingers longer than expected.
